3 February 2023

Hello the NIGHTINGALE Newsletter readers! For the second edition, we are looking ahead to 2023 and planning our next project activities.

This newsletter provides regular updates that cover the most recent developments in the project, important events, and news in the sector of emergency response and disaster resilient technologies.

The NIGHTINGALE Project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 10102195.

What’s New With NIGHTINGALE

Roundtable discussion and plenary meeting in Berlin

The second NIGHTINGALE roundtable discussion and the second plenary meeting took place in Messe Berlin at the end of October 2022. We caught up with project partners Roberto Faccincani of ESTES – European Society for Trauma and Emergency Surgery and Dimitra Dionysiou of I-SENSEGroup/ICCS to discuss the importance of developing new technologies in close collaboration with end users, such as emergency medicine professionals.

The NIGHTINGALE Project Interview Series

In December, the first videos of the project’s interview series were released. This series was created to deliver behind the scenes knowledge, partner insights, and project updates. We heard from Eleftherios Ouzounoglou of I-SENSEGroup/ICCS, Maddalena D’Urso of Cittadinanzattiva APS, and Sabina Magalini of Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore.

NIGHTINGALE Publications

Article in CORDIS

NIGHTINGALE was featured on the CORDIS EU website with a news article in six languages. CORDIS is the official news and information channel for research and innovation projects funded by the European Commission.

Translational science methodology in disaster medicine

We are celebrating the publication of a new article in the International Journal of Disaster Risk Reduction, a major scientific journal in the field of risk and disaster management. The article presents the translational science methodology which was adopted to guide the development of the NIGHTINGALE toolkit. Designed as a multi-stage process, this methodological approach helps to transfer evidence-based knowledge and perspectives of multiple stakeholders into concrete implementation actions. It has provided solid grounding for the implementation phase of the project and can be adopted by other research and innovation projects.

Education, training, and technological innovation

A new publication in the European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery presents a discussion on the challenges of triage in mass casualty incidents (MCI) and the importance of dedicated educational and training programmes for MCI response in Europe. The article highlights the need for technological innovation for MCI management and an opportunity for close collaboration between emergency medicine professionals, such as members of ESTES – European Society for Trauma and Emergency Surgery, and the NIGHTINGALE project.

NIGHTINGALE’s Currently Reading Corner

We’ve been reviewing a diverse range of topics that encapsulate the NIGHTINGALE objectives since the project began. Below are some recent examples.

Improving the mission, governance and operations of the EU HERA Check out the article here for a look at how the Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority (HERA) is expected to contribute to Europe’s resilience against future health emergencies and other risks.

The European Commission has adopted new measures to improve emergency communications in support of efficient and quick responses via the single, EU emergency number, 112. A new delegated regulation contains specific measures related to emergency caller location information, accessibility for people with disabilities, and routing emergency communication to the most appropriate public safety answering point.

A new study published in Prehospital and Disaster Medicine looks at the top ten research priorities in prehospital care in Spain perceived by doctors and nurses. In addition to the need to incorporate innovative aspects and new data analysis technologies, coordination and management of MCIs is identified as one of the top priorities. You can view the article here.

Upcoming Events

Tabletop Exercise, Israel, 7-8 February 2023

The second tabletop exercise is taking place In Tel Aviv, Israel, and is facilitated by project partner Magen David Adom in Israel. The exercise is designed to demonstrate the use of the NIGHTINGALE tools in response to a simulated MCI scenario in a classroom-based environment. It will give an opportunity to potential end users to provide their feedback in a structured manner on tools and their usability in an emergency response operation.

Roundtable, Ljubljana, May 2023

The next NIGHTINGALE roundtable will take place in Ljubljana, Slovenia, prior to the annual European Congress of Trauma and Emergency Surgery, which brings together trauma and emergency surgeons from all over Europe.
