NIGHTINGALE NEWSLETTER 5

NIGHTINGALE Publishes 5th Newsletter

20 December 2023

Hi NIGHTINGALE subscribers,

Welcome to the fifth edition of our LinkedIn newsletter! NIGHTINGALE aims to advance prehospital life support and triage with innovative technologies and digital solutions.

In this newsletter, you will find a wrap-up of the NIGHTINGALE project in 2023. This edition highlights the key project activities, events, publications, and milestones from across the last twelve months.

The NIGHTINGALE project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 10102195.

NIGHTINGALE Events

Tabletop Exercise, Tel Aviv – February

The second Tabletop Exercise was organised and hosted by Magen David Adom in Israel, in Tel Aviv on 7-8 February 2023. The exercise brought together end users and technical partners to test and validate the usability of the NIGHTINGALE toolkit in emergency response operations. The feedback gathered at this exercise proved invaluable and greatly informed the development and preparations for the next important steps in testing the NIGHTINGALE solutions.

Third Roundtable, Ljubljana – May

The third NIGHTINGALE Roundtable with end users took place on 5-6 May in Ljubljana, Slovenia, in conjunction with the annual European congress of ESTES – European Society for Trauma and Emergency Surgery (ECTES 2023). The roundtable was a perfect opportunity for the user partners to review the progress made. The participants updated the user requirements that reflected the new concept and design of the NIGHTINGALE Toolkit’s components. The discussion on individual tools took place in dedicated working groups, which tailored their recommendations for a specific device or technology. The roundtable discussion was also an opportunity for partners to plan scenarios for the forthcoming Small-Scale Exercise in Novara. The ongoing research and development within the NIGHTINGALE project was presented to external stakeholders and participants of ECTES 2023.

Plenary Meeting, Dublin – June

Our third plenary meeting took place in Dublin, Ireland, on 27-28 June. We engaged in two-day thorough discussions, focusing on updates regarding progress and outlining the next steps of the upcoming testing, integration, and validation activities.

Small-Scale Exercise, Novara – October

Between 16 and 20 October, the Small-Scale Exercise took place in Novara, Italy, organised by CRIMEDIM – Center for Research and Training in Disaster Medicine, Humanitarian Aid and Global Health in cooperation with the Italian Red Cross (Galliate). The first two days were dedicated to the fourth NIGHTINGALE Roundtable with user partners, members of the User Advisory Board, and the external ethics advisor of the project. The small-scale exercise focused on testing, integrating, and deploying the NIGHTINGALE Toolkit within controlled yet realistic mass casualty incident scenarios. A diverse group of participants, including first responders, emergency medical practitioners, tested the NIGHTINGALE tools in two mass casualty incident scenarios. Both the players and the observers provided valuable feedback in focus group discussions during the evaluation of the exercise. The collected feedback will inform the next development phase and the preparation for the full-scale exercises.

Recent Events

CERIS Disaster Resilient Societies, Brussels – December

On 4-7 December our project partners participated in the annual event of the Community for European Research and Innovation for Security (CERIS) organised by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Migration and Home Affairs. Representing the NIGHTINGALE Project, Eleftherios Ouzounoglou of I-SENSEGroup/ICCS moderated a panel discussion on the perspectives of medical first responders. Furthermore, Eleftherios Ouzounoglou and Evangelos Sdongos of ASTRIAL GmbH contributed to a discussion on research gaps in developing disaster resilient technology.

NIGHTINGALE Publications

In 2023, the NIGHTINGALE project achieved a milestone by publishing six impactful publications showcasing its significant contributions to the field of mass casualty incidents and disaster medicine.

You can read and download all NIGHTINGALE publications on our website.

Cluster Activities

In March 2023, the NIGHTINGALE Project joined the initiative to establish the Responder Technology Cluster (RTC) together with eight DRS02-related projects working on disaster resilient technologies for first responders. Four more projects in a similar domain joined the RTC in September-October 2023. As a cluster, we coordinated our dissemination efforts at the Security Research Event and CERIS Annual Event. We have also worked on the joint dissemination strategy for 2024 and the cluster communication materials.

Through continuous knowledge-sharing activities, the cluster aims to advance the ongoing work on first responder technologies. We are delighted to continue working with RTC into 2024 to enhance and promote the research and development of innovative solutions for first responders.
