NIGHTINGALE Roundtable and Small-Scale Exercise
16-20 October
Novara, Italy
On 16-20 October 2023, NIGHTINGALE partners will attend the fourth Roundtable and first Small-Scale Exercise (SSX) in Novara, Italy. The Small-Scale Exercise is organised and hosted by the Centre for Research and Training in Disaster Medicine, Humanitarian Aid and Global Health, Università del Piemonte Orientale (CRIMEDIM-UPO) in cooperation with the Italian Red Cross. The Roundtable with end users and experts is coordinated by the European Society for Trauma and Emergency Surgery (ESTES). This week-long event marks a significant stage in developing the NIGHTINGALE toolkit. The event will test and deploy the prototype of NIGHTINGALE tools, services and applications in controlled but realistic mass casualty incident scenarios. The participants will have an opportunity to discuss and provide valuable feedback on NIGHTINGALE technologies for the next development phase.
Fourth Roundtable
16-17 October
The Roundtable brings together NIGHTINGALE technical and user partners and experts from the User Advisory Board. They will discuss the assessment criteria of emergency response plans during mass casualty incidents (MCIs). They will work on developing and clarifying key performance indicators (KPIs) to evaluate future training, testing, and validation exercises in NIGHTINGALE. The Roundtable will also address legal and ethical issues of integrating new technologies in MCI emergency response plans.
The Roundtable will take place on 16-17 October at the Novarello Villaggio Azzurro.
Small-scale exercise
18-20 October
The Small-Scale Exercise aims to demonstrate and test how the NIGHTINGALE innovative toolkit and its various components can help to achieve effective multi-agency emergency response in a realistic but controlled environment. The first prototype of the NIGHTINGALE toolkit is to be tested in two complex simulated MCI scenarios, with a particular focus on triage and pre-hospital care.
In addition to NIGHTINGALE partners, participants include volunteers with extensive experience in pre-hospital management from civil protection agencies, such as emergency medical services, fire brigades, and police, as well as civic volunteers. They will deploy, test, and evaluate the developed tools during the exercise.
On 18 October, the technical partners will conduct an informative demonstration session. This session will comprehensively present each component of the NIGHTINGALE toolkit, offering hands-on training in the practical use of these tools during triage and pre-hospital care.
The main exercise will follow on 19 October at the headquarters of the Italian Red Cross in Galliate. The volunteers will deploy the prototype of the NIGHTINGALE toolkit in two distinct MCI scenarios. Partners and experts without an assigned role in the SSX scenarios will participate as observers and collect data and materials for the final assessment. The exercise will conclude with a debriefing session on 20 October, providing an in-depth evaluation of the exercise.
